under construction — add brief descriptions

Introduction

Biostatistics covers a wide variety of applied topics. This final chapter contains brief annotations and R script for the following additional topics:

  • 20.1: Area under the curve
Area under the relative (receiver) operating carrier as a method of showing the tradeoff between sensitivity and specificity for a diagnostic model. Note: section is still under construction.
  • 20.2: Peak detection
Note: section is still under construction, currently consists only of a list of subtopics with no explanation.
  • 20.3: Baseline correction
Note: section is still under construction, currently consists only of a list of subtopics with no explanation.
  • 20.4: Conducting surveys
Basics of conducting surveys for statistical purposes, including how to structure questions. Sources of biases in survey-based research. Note: section is still under construction, missing citations.
  • 20.5: Time series
Time series, which refer to any measure recorded over time, and how they are divided into stationary and differencing time series. Decomposing differencing time series into their component series. Forecasting for time series. Note: section is still under construction.
  • 20.6: Dimensional analysis
Discussion of cluster analysis. Note: section is still under construction, missing significant amounts of content.
  • 20.7: Estimating population size
Discussion of approaches to determine how many individuals are present in a particular geographic area. Note: section is still under construction, missing significant content.
  • 20.8: Diversity indexes
Note: section is still under construction.
  • 20.9: Survival analysis
Survival analysis as a method of modeling time until death of organisms or failures of a system. Note: section is still under construction.
  • 20.10: Growth equations and dose response calculations
Fitting growth equations to data using R. Fitting logistic curves to dose-response data using R and Microsoft Excel Solver. Note: some subsections are still under construction, and questions are pending.
  • 20.11: Plot a Newick tree
Using R to plot phylogenetic trees in different formats, including simple phylograms, cladograms, and star phylogeny models. Process for labeling nodes and rerooting trees.
  • 20.12: Phylogenetically independent contrasts
The algorithm of phylogenetically independent contrasts. Accounting for nonindependence of species' evolutionary history. Note: section is still under construction.
  • 20.13: How to get the distances from a distance tree
Extracting and comparing the patristic distance, or the sum of the branch lengths that link two nodes, for each pair of species in a phylogenetic tree. Note: section is still under construction, several subsections are missing content.
  • 20.14: Binary classification
Note: section is still under construction, currently consists only of a list of subtopics with no explanation.
