In order to prove that the explanatory variable is causing a change in the response variable, it is necessary to isolate the explanatory variable. The explanatory variable is scent, and the response variable is the time it takes to complete the maze.

In each case, one quantity depends on another. There is a relationship between the two quantities that we can describe, analyze, and use to make predictions. In this section, we will analyze such relationships.

However, I personally find those names horrible: they’re hard to remember and they’re highly misleading, because (a) the IV is never actually “independent of everything else” and (b) if there’s no relationship, then the DV doesn’t actually depend on the IV. For example, in an experiment the IV refers to the manipulation, and the DV refers to the measurement.

When conducting research, experimenters often manipulate variables. When a variable is manipulated by an experimenter, it is called an independent variable. The experiment seeks to determine the effect of the independent variable on a dependent variable.

It emphasizes the significance of control groups and blinding to reduce bias, highlighting how expectations can affect outcomes.
