Or something along those lines. Anyway, because SPSS is a commercial piece of software, you will need to purchase it or otherwise obtain it. Some campuses provide free access to SPSS while others may not. Just check with your instructor.
Installing SPSS
Let's get SPSS installed on your computer. Find the file you downloaded. Unless you placed it in a specific place, chances are the file is located in your Downloads folder. Regardless of where it is, double-click the file and you should see something like this:
Note that I am using a Mac, so if you are installing SPSS on a Windows computer, the screen may look slightly different. Regardless of operating system you are using, click on Continue and follow the on-screen prompts to install SPSS. Once the installation is complete, head on the next section.
Starting up SPSS
Now that SPSS is installed, it's time to start it up! When you do that, the first thing you’ll see is an opening screen which should look something like this:
There is also likely a window behind this one, but ignore that for now. When you see this nonsense above, the best thing to do is to hit the Close button to make it go away. If you want to make this opening screen go away forever, check the "Don't show this dialog in the future" box and then hit the Close button. If you like this screen because it gives you comfort, that's cool too. Regardless of your affection for the opening screen, for purposes of this section, just click on the Close button. What you'll be left with is a window that looks something like this:
If you're anything like most people, at this point you are wondering what this silly screen is. For that, move on to the next section.
