As Dr. MO used the first edition of this textbook for a few years, so became aware of important changes that needed to be made. This second edition. The following is an annotated list of the bigger changes:

    • The first edition's third chapter covered several descriptive analyses. In this second edition, chapter 3 covers the three measures of central tendency, and a new chapter 4 covers measures of variability (primarily standard deviations).
    • The first edition organized the textbook into four units. This second edition removed those unit markers. However, the themes for each unit were still utilized. See the For Faculty page for more information on the original units and the themes.
    • The model of the scientific method used in the first edition was replaced with a model that better aligns with a behavioral statistics course. The stages of this updated model were then simplified to be used as steps of the Null Hypothesis Significance Testing process.
    • The dependent t-test formula was updated to make it easier for students to follow the equation. This change lost some of the intuitive understanding of what the formula is doing, however.
    • There was some redundancy and extraneous sections in the first edition, which were deleted.
    • All critical value tables were moved to the Back Matter, rather than in the section in which they were first mentioned. Also, the critical value tables for z and t were simplified.

Additionally, there were minor changes related to coding or typographical errors that were fixed. Feel free to use the "Leave feedback" function on any pages to note other errors.

There are tons of more changes that Dr. MO would like to make, but she ran out of time for this edition. :( In particular, future editions will break Unit 2 into two units, one based on t-tests and one based on ANOVAs. If you have data that would be good to work with for ANOVAs, please send it to Dr. MO! In particular, she's interested in data that BIPOC students would find interesting and has a strengths focus (not a deficit lens). If you have suggestions, you can also use the "Leave feedback" button on the bottom of any change.
