She also served as the director of the Institute of Statistics of the Consolidated University of North Carolina and the Statistics Research Division of North Carolina State University. Their research area was experimental design, which deals with how experiments should be set up so that the best information can be obtained from the observations. In 1950 she published the book Experimental Designs with W. G. Cochran. This book became the major reference work on the design of experiments for statisticians. Cox was also the first woman elected to the International Statistical Institute and in 1956, she was elected president of the American Statistical Association.
