John Tukey (1915–2000) was an American mathematician and statistician who was known for developing many new modern methods in these fields. He was particularly adept at algorithmic development and the development of new methods for visually representing data. An early pioneer in computer science, he is also credited with coining the term bit and the first published use of the word software.
