    Many research studies will provide measures of location and variability as well as percentiles to summarize certain aspects of the data that they have observed. Measures of location can be interpreted as representing the typical or center of the data, and measures of variation can be interpreted as the typical distance that data points in the data set will vary from the location. The relationship between the location and the variation is interpreted in terms of the empirical rule. Percentiles provide information about the rank of individual points, regarding the percentage of data below a specified point, within the set of data.

    In summary, the key questions in critically analyzing measures of location, variation, and percentiles in a study are: 

    1. What do the measures of location indicate about the typical sizes of the values in the set of data?
    1. What do the measures of variation indicate about the how far data values in the set of data may be from the measure of location?
    1. What does the empirical rule indicate about how much data is concentrated within ranges around the mean?
    1. What do percentiles indicate about how small or large data values are compared to the rest of the data values?
