The study focused on the state of Ohio, and to obtain information about cigarette smoking among adults there, the study used data from the 2017 Ohio Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, an annual random-digit dial telephone survey. Random-digit dialing is a methodology of selecting individuals for a survey that essentially calls random valid phone numbers, and can access anyone with a phone number, whether it is publicly available or not. This type of random digit dialing methodology essentially takes a simple random sample of individuals who have phone numbers in the area. While the response rate is not addressed in the research, it appears that careful weighting of the responses was used to reduce the effect of non-response bias. Specifically, the authors state that the data are “a state-representative sample of adults” (Glasser et al. 2022).
