One study of this issue was based on observations and in-depth interviews with 36 young women at a public residential drug treatment facility and juvenile detention center. Most of the study's participants were in juvenile justice facilities multiple times before, were legally adults, and had come from problematic homes. Many had been exposed to violence. Most of the participants were in the facility on either drug charges or probation violations connected to drug use and saw substance use as a “problem” for them. The interviews generally showed that the participants perceived that they had little support to help them when they left the facility (Myers 2017).
The population that the researcher studied in this case is quite specifically the young adult female residents of the facility at the time of the study. While the study does provide important and detailed insights into the perceptions of these young women, it would be difficult to generally extend these results beyond the facilities included in the study, particularly because the facilities were run at the county level. Even within the same state, rehabilitation options, access to counseling, and employment assistance may differ from county to county and even from facility to facility.
