Other individual risk factors such as race and ethnicity, gender, age, and substance abuse have also been cited as contributing factors (Susser et al. 1993; Shelton et al. 2009). A study from 1997 uses previous research on adolescent factors for negative psychiatric outcomes in adulthood to link these factors to homelessness (Herman et al. 1997). The hypothesis was also based on previous observations that these factors are associated with adult homelessness, and the study sought to strengthen these conclusions (Susser et al. 1993; Koegel 2011).
This study analyzed data from an earlier study based on observations from 1,507 adults. Those observed in the first study were contacted and observed again. In the initial observations, 169 individuals reported that they had been homeless at some point in their adult lives. A second group of observations from the first study was constructed of individuals who had not reported being homeless but were comparable to the group that reported homelessness in terms of other factors often associated with homelessness. Both groups were asked to report their assessments of the quality of their care during childhood in terms of factors such as lack of parental care, physical abuse, and sexual abuse.
After carefully controlling for these additional factors using statistical techniques, the authors of the study found that adverse events in adolescence were strongly associated with periods of homelessness as adults. This is an observational study based on a case-control design. The authors were interested in the effect of factors that occurred in adolescence and their effect on homelessness. A standard approach would consider two groups of adult subjects: those who had the adolescent factors and those who did not. Periods of adult homelessness would then be observed and compared for each group. However, this study grouped adults by whether they have experienced periods of homelessness and looked at the adolescent factors in each group, resulting in the case-control design.
