    When critically analyzing a study in terms of its use of empiricism, one should consider whether a study is based on an axiomatic structure with deductive reasoning or an empirical structure based on inductive reasoning through the framework of the scientific method. If a study is based on an axiomatic structure, then the axioms, the statements that initially are taken to be true, are crucial and should be carefully examined. Studies based on the scientific method should be examined in terms of the steps shown in Figure 2.5. A careful examination of what was first observed, and how these observations were used to develop the hypotheses to be tested is important. Evaluating the remaining steps of the scientific method will be covered in detail in the remaining chapters of this book.

    While pure axiomatic studies are quite rare in applied statistical research, the method of deductive reasoning from some initial assumptions as a method for developing a hypothesis to use in the scientific method is common. This type of reasoning is also common in interpreting the results of the testing phase of the scientific method. Therefore, one will find that many studies contain aspects of both inductive and deductive reasoning.

    The key questions in critically analyzing the use of empiricism in a study are:
    1. Does the study use an axiomatic method, an empirical method, or both?
    2. Do the basic assumptions of the analysis seem reasonable? Are the axioms self-evident? Are there weak axioms that could cause the entire analysis to be questionable?
    3. To what extent is the scientific method used?
    4. How would a multicultural approach to science be used for the same experiment?
