In the Hispanic community between 1999 and 2017 the age-adjusted mortality rate due to suicide among Hispanic females increased about 40% and remained consistently high for Hispanic men at 11.2 per every 100,000 deaths (Curtin et al. 2016). Although mental health and substance use are factors associated with suicide, death by suicide is also a major concern for populations who experience discrimination. Hispanic individuals, as well as people who are in the LGBTQIA+ community, experience high levels of stress due to discrimination and violence from their social environment (Wang et al. 2021).
A study based on data from the National Violent Death Reporting System, a data gathering system managed by the Division of Violence Prevention at the National Center for Injury and Prevention Control, considered violent death data for Hispanic individuals between 2012 and 2016 for 32 states (Mercy et al. 2006; Steenkamp et al. 2006; Blair et al. 2016). The data showed that there is an association between manner of death and sexual orientation, where the percentage of LGBTQIA+ individuals was higher among those whose manner of death was suicide than those whose manner of death was not suicide.
Furthermore, the average age of individuals whose manner of death was suicide was higher when compared than those who died in other ways. Gender and manner of death were also associated in that women showed lower proportions among those who committed suicide compared to those who died in other ways. Finally, there was an association between education and manner of death where individuals with some college and individuals with a college degree or higher were over-represented among those whose manner of death was suicide. The study also found other links between mental health problems, alcohol related problems and rate of suicide. More advanced statistical modeling techniques were also used to show that there was an increasing trend in these rates over time (Alvarez-Hernandez and Mowbray 2022).
