The examples of the previous section give only a hint of what statistics and data science can achieve when applied across many fields. In this section some specific applications are considered in a little more detail. Each of the applications highlighted below is based on formal studies that have been published in professional and academic journals. Of course, other types of applications exist—ones that are used internally for businesses, for example. It is often difficult to obtain specific details about these applications and therefore this book will mainly rely on published studies for examples.
