    So now what? What you want to look for in these next sections is to understand the following. Numbers represent variation. Statistics analyzes numbers as a way to analyze variation. So, when you see numbers, see them as data, and statistics analyzes these data. Eventually, statistics is the art of analyzing data to see if there are any patterns in how the data varies. These patterns are going to be useful in understanding the issue that we are curious about.

    Why do you give a rat’s ass about variation? First of all, that’s how we know things matter because of how they vary. Why do some people get cancer and others do not? Why do some people recover from alcoholism and some do not? Why are there less forests in certain parts of the world compared to other parts? Why are some people taller than others? (Curiously, a podcast devoted to that question states that the lack of access to quality health care and healthy practices contributes to people getting shorter, source: Why are Americans getting shorter? | On Point (wbur.org). Why are some White Sox fans and some are Cubs fans (A: White Sox fans are intelligent, and Cubs fans are well…. less so, boom!). Understanding differences in terms of variations is what the endeavor is all about in research and statistics.
